Skeletal muscle are muscles that move bones and other structures in response to voluntary messages from the nervous system. They are one of the three classifications of muscle. The other two categories are cardiac muscle and smooth muscle. Each category of muscle has a different appearance and different role. Skeletal muscle tissue is composed of long cells called muscle fibers that have a striated appearance and respond the voluntary commands. They connect to bones via connective tissue called tendons. Movement occurs when nerve cells stimulate the muscle to contract. ==Studies== *1992, Skeletal muscle metabolism in the chronic fatigue syndrome.
