Talk:Chiari malformation

From MEpedia, a crowd-sourced encyclopedia of ME and CFS science and history

I strongly disagree with editorializing re: surgery being risky and fibromyalgia and Chiari malformation being two separate diagnoses. They are, but it is possible to have both. We need to present the research (which appears to have been deleted!) that showed higher prevalence of Chiari malformation in fibromyalgia cohorts alongside those studies that showed no relationship or higher prevalence. No surgeon will operate on someone "because they have fibromyalgia." They must meet the criteria for Chiari malformation. Am reverting edits that removed this information. Also noting association between Chiari and EDS --JenB (talk) 13:35, July 7, 2019 (EDT)

"Some individuals diagnosed with Fibromyalgia (FM) were undergoing surgery for CM." – I don't totally understand what this means Also the question of whether you have a CM is pretty cut and dry. You either do or you don't. And your neurosurgeon either thinks you need surgery or they don't. The surgery is risky but necessary in those situations where it is is necessary. Whether it resolves symptoms of FM and ME depends on the case (sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't). But whether someone should have surgery for a Chiari malformation is less about whether or not it's risky than whether or not you have a Chiari malformation. The vast majority of people with FM will not.

I think it might be better of there is a section about related diseases and we group evidence re: Chiari malformation's relationship to EDS, POTS, FM and ME (if any).

I also think we really need to have policy of not putting external links in the text of the article except in "Learn more."
